U.S. stocks rose Tuesday, getting a lift from two economic reports and upbeat corporate earnings. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 65 points, or 0.4%, to 17117. The S&P 500 index gained 10 points, or 0.5%, to 1983. The index hit a new intraday record of 1986.27 earlier in the session. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 29 points, or 0.7%, to 4453. Stock trading has been choppy in recent days as investors evaluate corporate earnings reports to gauge whether the market can continue pushing to new highs.
